About Us
Kuruka Equestrian’s biggest and most enjoyed program is our Barn Monitor Program, where participants will develop invaluable work and horsemanship skills.
These are the tweens and teens who WANT to be at the barn every day, they want to know every single thing that goes into everything horses. In the old days these were called “the barn rats”, the barn rats are the kids who spend more time at the barn than they do in their rooms.
When our lesson program exploded in 2013, it got to the point there was always people around to help or begging to do things around the barn. So, Angela created the Barn Monitor program. This brought more organization to the barn on busy lesson nights and became a huge hit with everyone including parents.
Our Barn Monitors train to be able to help with nightly barn chores / horse care / tune up rides along with teaching new lesson students everything about our lesson horses. Once trained and given a day of the week on one of our busy lesson nights, our Barn Monitors are available to answer questions, help out with lessons and general horse care. We do require a minimum of Rider Level 3 before starting this program. (If you are unsure what level you are please talk to Angela.)
One of the favorite rewards of being a Barn Monitor is they can exchange their working hours for “free rides” on a school horses every Friday. This is a fun reward that everyone loves as it helps riders for getting a feel and putting in commitment to eventually part boarding or owning a horse. They can also save their hours towards discounts on clinics or use towards high school volunteer hours.
Barn Monitors are also able to assist with Summer Camp weeks for extra hours in the summer months as everyone would rather be at the barn. Then at the end of the summer we all enjoy going on surprise field trip picked by Angela & Coaches, along with having our traditional barn sleepover with pizza party and pony soccer!
*This year we introduced a new program for the summer off of the Barn Monitor Program, called the CITP (Counceller’s in Training). It exploded with popularity to the point we had to add many new spots. Due to the overwhelming popularity, we will be bringing back this program for 2025. More info will be added closer to but if you are interested in more info, please reach out to Angela.
Being a barn monitor & camp counselor has taught me so much more about horses and shown me how to be responsible and mature. It’s shown me how to work around kids as well as all the animals on the farm. But also, I learn things about myself and my riding. It has always been the highlight of my summer, and brought me so much closer to horses and the community at the barn. I enjoy doing my barn monitoring every week and I’m so grateful to be a part of the team.
