Kuruka's Barn Monitor Program

Kuruka Equestrian’s most popular and beloved program is our Barn Monitor Program — a hands-on opportunity where participants develop invaluable horsemanship and life skills while becoming an essential part of our barn community.

The Evolution of the Barn Monitor Program

The Barn Monitor Program at Kuruka Equestrian was born out of a love for horses and a desire to cultivate a community of young equestrians eager to learn. Established in response to the growing interest in our lesson program, this initiative has become a cornerstone of our operations. It offers participants the chance to gain hands-on experience in horse care and barn management, fostering a sense of responsibility and teamwork. The program not only supports the daily activities at the barn but also provides invaluable life lessons, making it a beloved part of our community.

Since its inception, the Barn Monitor Program has thrived, drawing in tweens and teens who are passionate about horses. These young enthusiasts, affectionately known as ‘barn rats,’ dedicate their time to mastering the intricacies of horsemanship. The program’s structure allows them to exchange work hours for riding opportunities, further enhancing their skills and commitment. With a focus on safety, education, and fun, the program has become a favorite among participants and their families, offering a unique blend of learning and enjoyment.

Why Spending Time at the Barn Matters

The Barn Monitor Program is perfect for young equestrians eager to deepen their understanding of horse care and barn management. This program is designed for individuals who are passionate about horses and want to gain practical skills in horsemanship and leadership. Participants will develop essential life skills such as responsibility, teamwork, and communication, making it an excellent opportunity for those aspiring to own a horse or pursue a career in equine management.

Through hands-on experience, participants will learn about daily barn operations, horse grooming, and safe riding practices. What Barn Monitors Do

Our Barn Monitors train to assist with:

  • Daily barn chores and horse care

  • Tack adjustments and grooming

  • Tune-up rides on lesson horses

  • Supporting new riders and helping them learn about our lesson horses

Once trained, each Barn Monitor is assigned a specific night during our busiest lesson evenings. They become the go-to helpers around the barn — answering questions, assisting coaches, and ensuring everything runs smoothly.

Prerequisite: Participants must have a minimum of Rider Level 3 before joining the program. (If you’re unsure of your level, please speak with Angela.)

Rewards & Opportunities

One of the best parts of being a Barn Monitor? The free ride rewards!
Monitors can exchange their working hours for free rides on a school horse every Friday — a fun and motivating perk that helps them build consistency and confidence in their riding.

Barn Monitors can also:

  • Save hours toward in house show discounts

  • Count their time toward high school volunteer hours

  • Assist during Summer Camp weeks to earn extra hours (and enjoy even more barn time!)

At the end of the summer, we celebrate together with a surprise field trip chosen by Angela and the coaches — plus our traditional barn sleepover, complete with pizza and pony soccer!

CITP: Counselors in Training Program

New in 2024, we introduced the Counselors in Training Program (CITP) — a summer extension of the Barn Monitor Program. It was so popular we had to add extra spots!

Due to its huge success, we’re thrilled to announce that CITP will return for Summer 2025. More details will be released closer to the date, but if you’re interested in learning more, please reach out to Angela for early information or to reserve your spot.
